On walking tours, students gain historical perspective on the Gowanus Canal as a former salt marsh that became a polluted industrial waterway, with a Superfund clean up and stewardship efforts underway. Students learn about industrial waste and Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) as the two primary sources of water pollution. Students will also be able to observe and calculate the water saved by the various types of Green Infrastructure they discover and learn about along their route.
They will see how green infrastructure, such as rain gardens, bioswales and permeable pavement are engineered to reduce CSO and climate impacts such as increased precipitation and the urban heat island effect.
Important Notes:
- Walking tours have different start and end points.
- Tours start on the public esplanade, south west corner of the Carroll Street Bridge.

The Gowanus Canal has captivated people for more than 400 years, from its salt marsh era to a polluted industrial waterway in Brooklyn that today is undergoing clean up and revitalization. Gowanus Canal Conservancy (GCC) is dedicated to facilitating the development of a resilient, vibrant, open space network centered on the Gowanus Canal through activating and empowering community stewardship of the Gowanus Watershed. Since 2006, we have served as the environmental steward for the neighborhood through leading volunteer and youth stewardship; engaging students in environmental issues; and working to advocate for, build, and maintain innovative green infrastructure around the Gowanus Canal.
At this time masks are still required to be worn by all program participants due to the inability to social distance throughout our programs. We provide masks for anyone who may need.
