Learn about avalanche safety and snow science in the classroom. Students will learn what snowpack is and that all snow is not the same. Students will use models and a bit of imaginations to create different snow conditions to discover what conditions make avalanches more common. This program can be run at your school or at the American Mountaineering Center.
The Colorado Mountain Club, based in Golden, was organized in 1912 and is dedicated to uniting adventure, education, and preservation of Colorado's mountains. The Youth Education Program (YEP) of the CMC provides hands-on experiences in the classroom and outdoors for over 7,000 Colorado youth from diverse backgrounds every year. By providing opportunities for active learning through experiential and adventure education, YEP ignites a connection to the outdoors for Colorado youth. Furthermore, YEP connects Colorado Academic Standards with the mountains, providing a unique avenue for improving academic skills. Programs take place at your school, the American Mountaineering Center in Golden, or a local open space or park. Many program options can be combined to create a unique day-long program.
