Step back in time and experience the lives of the men and women who secured the American Frontier at Fort Osage National Historic Landmark.

Built in 1808, under the direction of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Fort Osage served a dual roles as both a military garrison and a trade center.

Today, authentically attired historical interpreters take visitors on a journey through Fort Osage's past. Visitors will enjoy breathtaking views of the reconstructed historic site that overlooks the Missouri River as they learn about the daily life of military, civilian, and Native American populations at Fort Osage and explore museum exhibits at the Fort Osage Education Center.

The Fort Osage Education Center houses 4,000 square feet of exhibition space sharing the history, people, cultures and environment connected with the historic site and region. The Education Center Gift Store has an extensive collection of merchandise including, books, jewelry, souvenirs, paper goods, historic reproductions, toys and unique gifts for the guest of any age.

Fort Osage National Historic Landmark-The Way West

Join us for a trip into the past! This specialized program, appropriate for grades 3rd and above, introduces your students to the historic trails such as the Lewis and Clark Trail, Santa Fe Trail, and Native American hunting and trade routes. Focusing on historic travel, students will experience for themselves the tasks and skills needed for those traveling in the early 19th Century. Surveying, map making, and journaling were just a few of the skills needed for these expeditions.

Experience Missouri’s early 1800s frontier with a curriculum-based field trip to Fort Osage National Historic Landmark! Students will understand the lives of the fort’s diverse residents including soldiers, women, children, and Native Americans. Fort Osage programs include time in the Education Center, a 4,000 square foot museum that offers video, audio, and interactive experiences, exhibitions and a gift shop. Exhibition subjects include geology, Native Peoples, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, military history, the Missouri River and its habitat. Programs are available Wednesday through Friday. Large groups may be divided to accommodate groups in the facilities. Lunch space is available on site and at nearby Hayes Park.

Hands-On History: Life at Fort Osage National Historic Landmark

Designed for 3rd grade and above, Hands-On History offers a look into daily life at Fort Osage and places historic tasks into the hands of your students. Beginning with a flag-raising (if arriving before 10:00 a.m.), designated stops with our staff, provide hands-on activities for students to experience different aspects of life for a soldier, civilian, and Native American. This program includes a musket firing demonstration.

Explore Fort Osage – Self-Guided Tour

Our self-guided tour for all grade levels allows you to explore the Education Center and Fort Osage at your own pace. A free activity brochure guides students, giving them an opportunity to actively engage with our authentically attired interpreters. No specialized activities are offered with this program.

Frontier Program at Fort Osage

Designed for elementary and middle school students, this field trip begins with a visit to the Education
Center. Then at the Fort, a brief orientation precedes the self-guided tour of this registered National Historic Site. The final 20 minutes incorporate an informal educational session with one or two interpreters. This program is available Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Living History Program at Missouri Town 1855

Your teachers and students will be divided into
smaller groups that rotate through several stations. Some of the stations could include visits
with some of the residents such as the blacksmith, the merchant, the woodworker, the tavern keeper, and the ox drover. You might also take a tour of the herb garden. This program is available Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
