Lighthouse Writers Workshop 39.74061° N -104.96382° W

Description

Lighthouse's Young Writers Workshops are designed to foster creativity, self-expression, and excitement about writing. There are no grades here, just the stories. We offer in-person and virtual workshops at Lighthouse including afterschool and weekend workshops, the Young Authors Collective, and summer camps, as well as youth outreach in schools, at juvenile residential treatment centers, and in collaboration with other arts organizations.

Led by working, published writers with a passion for sharing their craft, our outreach workshops provide access to our innovative creative writing programming to students across the Denver metro area. Our instructors actively engage young writers in the art of creative writing, provide new tools for self-expression, and increase literacy and writing skills.

We offer workshops in poetry, short story, novel, memoir, flash fiction, graphic novel, personal essay, and more. And because we know much of school curriculum is already in place, we customize workshops to fit individual classroom or program goals. We provide hour-long presentations, one-day or week-long intensives, after-school programs, multi-week sessions, or more long-term workshops culminating in public readings or published anthologies (or both) depending on the needs of the school or program and its young writers.

Learning Experiences

School Based Program

Creative Writing Lab

This casual format works well at drop-in centers and after-school programs. Each week, students explore an element of craft and/or participate in a hands-on activity or game. The focus is on making writing fun and empowering students through storytelling, as well as building reading and writing skills. Sample activities and lessons might include creating bizarre characters and using them in a story, exploring how to make villains more interesting, creating a new world for a story and drawing a map of that world, blackout poetry, cut-and-paste poetry, writing a scene for a new TV show, making up new words, and freewriting. All workshops contain a little bit of reading, writing, listening, and sharing.

A good choice for younger or reluctant writers, this workshop incorporates drawing and games to spark imaginations and make writing more fun. We can offer Fiction Toolbox as a single two-hour session or extend it into a multi-week or even year-long program. We can also offer this workshop as Poetry Toolbox, focused mainly on poetry.
