This 90 min long program takes place solely on the Kingsland Wildflowers Green Roofs. This tour is perfect for ages K-5th but can be adapted to older groups as well. Kingsland Wildflowers has the capacity of 30 students.
Through this program participants will be introduced to specific fauna and flora while exploring concepts such as biodiversity, seasonal changes, cycles of nature, native vs. non native species and ways in which humans have and continue to change our urban ecology. Activities and topics vary based on the season but may include plant walks, plant structures, pollination, insect identification, soil explorations, seed collecting, and flora and fauna identification.
Location: Kingsland Wildflowers
Kingsland Wildflowers at Broadway Stages is a unique 25,000 square foot green roof that is home to an abundance of beautiful native flowering plants and insects. The rooftop garden provides an opportunity for education around New York City’s conservation efforts, green infrastructure initiatives and policy, and our role in the growing climate crisis as well as incredible views of Manhattan and the neighboring heavy industrial business zones.
Accessibility: To access the community space (4th floor) there are 3.5 flights of stairs or an elevator in the lobby. The elevator can also reach the top floor (5th floor) although there is a step up to be able to walk around the main meadow. The roof’s paths are made of large slabs of stone that at times can be uneven.
Field trip fees:
$300 for Private Schools Groups
$250 for Non-School Group
$200 for Public Schools Groups
$0 for Local Public Schools in Districts: 14, 16, 24, 30, and 32
