Description

The Newtown Creek Alliance is a community-based organization dedicated to restoring, revealing and revitalizing Newtown Creek.

We work to restore community health, water quality, habitat, access, and vibrant commerce along Newtown Creek. Since 2002, the Alliance has served as a catalyst for effective community action.

Newtown Creek Alliance is dedicated to providing engaging local-ecologically centered educational experiences for all ages. Through our multi-modal, hands on activities and workshops we bring the Creek into the classroom and the classroom out to the Creek.


Lunch Notes

If your group would like to eat lunch before or after your trip, there are plenty of picnic tables and benches available on the Nature Walk just a short walk from Kingsland. We just ask you to be mindful of trash and clean up after yourself and your students

Waiver Policy
​​In the Trip Leader’s Packet folder linked above, you will find the waiver of claims/ photo release form. Please bring the completed waivers on the trip or if you would like, can scan and send them to me prior. The waiver of claims must be signed for students to participate in the trip.

Weather Policy
This trip will take place mostly outdoors so please have students dress accordingly. Tours will usually take place rain or shine but if you have concerns, please reach out by either email or phone.

Bathroom Notes

Kingsland has multiple bathrooms, water faucets, and resting spots for students to use. To reach the 4th floor I typically will lead students up the stairs but there is also an elevator in the lobby.

Cancellation Policy

If your group can not make the trip please cancel at least 24 hours before you are scheduled to arrive and we can then work with you to find a new date to reschedule the trip. If you must cancel the day of, you will not receive a refund and NCA is not required to schedule a make-up class.

Field Trip

Kingsland Wildflowers Green Roof Exploration

This 90 min long program takes place solely on the Kingsland Wildflowers Green Roofs. This tour is perfect for ages K-5th but can be adapted to older groups as well. Kingsland Wildflowers has the capacity of 30 students.
Through this program participants will be introduced to specific fauna and flora while exploring concepts such as biodiversity, seasonal changes, cycles of nature, native vs. non native species and ways in which humans have and continue to change our urban ecology. Activities and topics vary based on the season but may include plant walks, plant structures, pollination, insect identification, soil explorations, seed collecting, and flora and fauna identification.

Location: Kingsland Wildflowers

Kingsland Wildflowers at Broadway Stages is a unique 25,000 square foot green roof that is home to an abundance of beautiful native flowering plants and insects. The rooftop garden provides an opportunity for education around New York City’s conservation efforts, green infrastructure initiatives and policy, and our role in the growing climate crisis as well as incredible views of Manhattan and the neighboring heavy industrial business zones.

Accessibility: To access the community space (4th floor) there are 3.5 flights of stairs or an elevator in the lobby. The elevator can also reach the top floor (5th floor) although there is a step up to be able to walk around the main meadow. The roof’s paths are made of large slabs of stone that at times can be uneven.

Marine Ecology Investigation

Program Description:
This 90 min program will take place at the Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center and is for smaller groups who would like a more in-depth program about local marine ecology, water quality and our local estuary habitat restoration efforts.
The activities will vary depending on age but may include marine life identification, water related activities such as measuring water’s physical characteristics; dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, and salinity as well as learning how our findings impact our city, quality of life, and human and marine life health. Groups will be able to use tools such as microscopes, hand lenses, and water testing tools.
After the indoor portion students will be led through the newest portion of Hunters Point South Park to see the efforts of wetland restoration while walking the shoreline of the Newtown Creek and East River.

Location : Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center
We welcome groups to our brand new space, Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Education Center overlooking where the fast-moving East River and the calm waters of Newtown Creek meet. This program will start in the classroom and finish with a tour of the recently restored wetlands in the beautiful Hunters Point South Park.

Accessibility: Queens Landing meets ADA accessibility standards. The space is all one floor, has one large bathroom, and sinks for water refills. Please make a note on the sign up sheet if you have any additional questions about accessibility.

Climate Change Adaptations Tour

Program Description:
Climate Change Adaptation program takes place in Hunters Point South Park in Long Island City. The tour begins and ends at the brand new Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center. From there, we will set off on a walk through Hunters Point South Park discussing how history, climate change, and the water cycle has influenced the design of the park. Topics of landscape design, horticultural choices, water quality, and future development will be introduced through examples in the park creating a memorable and unique learning experience.

This program is around 120 min long and best for ages 4th grade and up as it includes a good amount of walking.

Location: Hunters Point Park and Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center

This park has the first public access point to the Creek in Queens and is designed to provide coastal habitat for wildlife and incorporate resilient design strategies that address stormwater management, rising sea levels, and pressures related to increasing density.

Accessibility: Hunters Point South Park has wide and even paved paths throughout the park. Stairs can be avoided if needed. There are public restrooms, water fountains, and shade available. Please make a note on the sign up sheet if you have any additional questions about accessibility.

Urban Waterways and Green Infrastructure Tour

Program Description:
The tour will start at Kingsland Wildflowers Green Roof where we introduce Newtown Creek past, present and future, touching on the importance of green infrastructure, stormwater management, and creating native habitat. A tour of the green roof and its ecology will follow while groups take in an entirely different view of the Creek and its surroundings.

We will then head to the Newtown Creek Nature Walk next door where the group will stop at different key points of interest to discuss our surroundings.

This program is between 90-120 min long and best for ages 4th grade and up as it includes a good amount of walking. We have found that Nature Walk tours are best with groups of 30 or less. If there are more students in your group, please contact us for the best way to proceed.

Note: This program has a different start and end point.

The Newtown Creek Nature walk is a Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is an open public art space that offers a scenic, meandering walk along the banks of the Creek. The walk is full of historical and artistic artifacts, native plants, animal sightings, and ongoing restoration projects that easily spark conversations about water quality, the history of the Creek, modern waste and consumption, and CSO challenges.

Accessibility: The Newtown Creek Nature Walk is wheelchair friendly although can have some uneven surfaces including small gravel, brick, and soil. There are two water fountains closer to the Kingsland Ave entrance, multiple trash cans and picnic benches, but no bathrooms. Please make a note on the sign up sheet if you have any additional questions about accessibility

This pre-field trip presentation will give students the base knowledge they need to fully understand the state of the Newtown Creek and the work of Newtown Creek Alliance.
