Liberty Hall Museum, a historic house and gardens museum in Union, New Jersey and the state's premier field trip destination, offers a diverse array of school programs, scout programs and outreach programs designed to enlighten and inform all curious minds.

Whether you are playing with toys from over 200 years ago with your school class, studying the plants in our historic greenhouses with your scout troop, or engaging with a presentation about Liberty Hall’s powerful women at your local library, Liberty Hall Museum provides the unique opportunity to see, touch, and relive history.

Our school programs meet a variety of New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards, our Scout Programs fulfill several requirements for badges, and all our programs are conducted by museum educators who share a genuine love of this museum. Liberty Hall’s historians and staff are dedicated to ensuring that every visitor who enters the museum leaves with a greater appreciation for our nation and our state’s history.

Field Trip

Changing Childhood

Museum educators dressed in period clothes will guide students on a time travel adventure through five different generations: 1780s; 1820s; 1860s; 1900s; and 1940s. Through artifacts, reproductions and hands-on activities, students will explore how life has changed for children at Liberty Hall by comparing lighting, transportation, communication, technology, clothing, music, and toys. From Crown to Country

In this historic setting, students will use artifacts and hands-on activities to learn how the events leading up to the American Revolution shaped the difficult decisions faced by New Jersey colonists. Guided by museum educators dressed in historic clothing, students will use a quill pen to sign a loyalty oath to support the patriot cause, remain loyal to King George III, or stay out of the conflict with the Quakers. Historian's Apprentice

Students will step into the role of historian and have the opportunity to study and transcribe primary source documents, learn how to take an oral history, observe best practices for the preservation and handling of historical materials, and work collaboratively to create a museum quality display of artifacts. A tour of Kean University including Kean Hall once a part of the Liberty Hall property, built by famed politician, banker, and resident of Liberty Hall Senator Hamilton Fish Kean, will round out the field trip. Students will trace the path to the American Revolution from the first stirrings of discontent to the birth of the nation using primary source documents and artifacts from the museum’s collection. Houses and Homes

This program allows students to explore the world of architecture and gain an understanding of the types of building materials used by architects and builders around the world. Exploring the buildings on Liberty Hall’s property, students will learn how different building materials were used throughout time, how climate, building function, and culture affect architecture, and how homes can come in many different shapes and sizes around the world. Students will spend time in our design lab and create their own two-and-three dimensional structures from a wide variety of materials.

Students will study the diverse architecture and floor plans of the many buildings on Liberty Hall’s campus to discover how function dictates form and building design and how the buildings have changed overtime. Students will take a virtual tour of Liberty Hall Museum’s Women’s Suffrage exhibit. Guided by museum educators in period clothing, students will discover the long struggle for the 19th Amendment, including how the Kean women of Liberty Hall did not favor suffrage. Students will end the program studying and transcribing primary source documents relating to the women’s suffrage movement.

The program concludes with a guided exploration into studying and transcribing primary source documents from the 1776 New Jersey Constitution in relation to Livingston’s writings.

Virtual Windows to the Past

Students can speak with historic characters that are positioned within an accurate historic setting. Teachers can choose from a menu of historical figures from the 1770s through the 1940s who will discuss their life. The discussion will be followed by a question and answer session with students.
