Historic Philadelphia, Inc.’s Once Upon A Nation offers unique “living history” experiences for groups of all types and all ages. Once Upon A Nation brings history to life through a series of award-winning walking tours and programs that are fun, historically immersive, and educational. Many of Once Upon A Nation's education programs created by classroom educators, for classroom educators, specifically designed for a wide range of learners with a variety of interests and learning styles. Our education and field trip staff will create an unforgettable, highly interactive, and educational experience for all in attendance.

All Once Upon A Nation group tours and programs are private and exclusive for your group of 20 people or more. Advanced reservations are required.

Colonial Kids Quest

A light-hearted adventure where kids of all ages will help animal puppets search for a missing copy of the Declaration of Independence. Along the way, find a runaway dog, Freedom, and meet helpful two-legged
and four-legged friends such as Francois the Frog, Graciela the Goose, Nibbles the Mouse, and Broadside the Cat.

Full Day Field Trip Experience - Grades 4-6

Experience all that Historic Philadelphia has to offer with a fully-planned, guided, interactive adventure where students are inspired by some of Philadelphia's greatest heroes. Visit the Betsy Ross House and learn the full story behind the legendary flag maker. Embark on a Once Upon A Nation Story Stroll, an educational, engaging, walking-tour style program where students play a part in bringing the past to life in the places where history was made. Visit Arch Street Meeting House, a historic Quaker meeting house, and learn about the values that helped to shape Philadelphia. End your day with a visit to another site or museum in the area - we'll take care of the reservation. The experience includes trained Field Trip Facilitators who make sure everything runs safely and smoothly, curricular materials that meet Common Core standards, and designated bus drop-off and pick-up locations.

Story Stroll

How do you get from the 1680s to today in just three city blocks? Join the living timeline and find out as our award-winning storytellers take you on a journey through Historic Philadelphia. Students will learn about religious tolerance, patriotism, equality, and standing up for what you believe in through interactive, educational stories about revolutionary figures like William Penn, James Forten, Octavius Catto, and Susan B. Anthony. During your stroll, historic sites come to life as students become part of the stories in the very places they happened.

Full Day Field Trip Experience - Grades 7-9

Experience the gruesome history of Philadelphia with a fully-planned, guided, interactive adventure where students uncover true, macabre tales about bloodletting, small pox, yellow fever, and more. Embark on a Bloodletting & Burials Story Stroll, an educational, interactive, walking-tour style program that leads students on a journey through Philadelphia's history of infection and inoculation. Along the way, meet figures who lived through the ghastly 18th century and discover why Philadelphia was an infectious place to be. Visit the American Philosophical Society (APS) for an in-depth, hands-on exploration of the 1793 yellow fever epidemic. Students will discover a hidden gem of the historic district and pick up some disease-fighting skills using primary sources documents from the APS Library. End your day with a visit to another site or museum in the area - we'll take care of the reservation. The experience includes trained Field Trip Facilitators who make sure everything runs safely and smoothly, curricular materials that meet Common Core standards, and designated bus drop-off and pick-up locations.

Colonial Stations

Experience all that Historic Philadelphia has to offer! Students are divided into five smaller groups and immersed in colonial programs designed to showcase 18th-century life. Groups rotate to each station in approximately 20-minute intervals.

Breeches & Petticoats

Meet Sarah Melton, a colonial businesswoman who worked as a “mantua maker” designing one-of-a-kind dresses for her clients in Philadelphia, and learn about popular clothing styles of the late 1700s. Independence After Hours

Take a journey back in time and walk the cobblestone streets of Philadelphia on the eve of July 4, 1776. Encounter the men and women who are bound to make history while enjoying a traditional colonial dinner at City Tavern. Then, walk to the Pennsylvania State House (Independence Hall) for an exclusive after-hours tour. You may even meet the Founding Fathers as they put the finishing touches on a revolutionary document.
